Scripps Ranch High School
SRCA January 2012 Newsletter

For most of us January brings about a time of reflection of the past year and resolutions for the future. As parents and educators we want to ensure that our children are getting every opportunity to succeed and we at SRHS will continue to work towards that goal in 2012. As we move forward into January, we will end our first semester with finals on January 25, 26 and 27. School will end at 11:30 AM on each of these days to allow students time to adequately prepare for finals in all classes. We are excited about the academic success that is so evident in the students that attend this wonderful school.

In support of our academic program, our regular after school peer tutoring continues to meet in the library for any student who needs occasional help with a class or project. We also have two different types of extended day classes that are currently in session. They are physics, chemistry, CAHSEE English or CAHSEE math. These two six-week classes have been meeting, Monday through Thursday from 2:30 PM – 5:00 PM, and are scheduled to end January 23. The benefits of taking these classes are extremely valuable to our students. We plan to offer spring courses as well so if your students are interested, please ask them to see their counselor.

SRHS NEWS

I am pleased to announce that the following students are the 2012 recipients of the Dingeman Scholarship Award for Volunteerism, Ross Fledderjohn, Nicole Schneider, and Mayanka Barath. These exceptional students will be presented with a $1,000 check from the Scripps Ranch Civic Association at the Senior Awards Night in June 2012. This year we had a significant increase in the number of applicants and are pleased with the quality of students who participated in this competition.

We are excited to see the construction of the Green Technology Building moving forward very quickly! We will be offering an additional new course next year to incoming 9th graders titled “Introduction to Green Technology”. Mr. Mena Abdo visited Marshall Middle School in December and spoke with the 7th and 8th grade students about this new course offering. We will continue teaching Introduction to Engineering and Principal of Engineering to our current students. Our counselors will begin the matriculation process for all our current students in January. The most exciting part of our engineering program is the agreement between the San Diego Unified School District and San Diego State University which will guarantee admission into the SDSU engineering program for students who satisfactorily complete ALL of the following:

- Complete the required coursework in the engineering program
- Maintain a GPA of 3.0
- Complete the A-G requirements
- Submit a portfolio of their engineering work to SDSU
- Pass the entry level math and English placement exams
- Take the SAT1 or ACT test
For additional information regarding this agreement and/or courses, please make sure to attend “Falcon Night” on Thursday, January 19, 2012, 6:00 PM in the SRHS gymnasium.
